Star Fox fans who still remember the Nintendo 64 days will have a familiar option on Switch 2. Nintendo has revealed that the new version of Star Fox can be played with the Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 controller, giving long-time players a control feel that sits closer to the original release.
That should be welcome news for veteran pilots who want their Arwing to handle in a more classic way. If you do not already own the Switch Online Nintendo 64 controller, Nintendo says it can be purchased through the My Nintendo Store, so there is a route for players who want that old-school pad in hand.
Control Options
- Nintendo 64 controller support is included for players who want a setup closer to the older version.
- Joy-Con 2 controls are also supported, including a mouse targeting option for aiming and steering. PlayStation 2 mouse controls are not part of the announcement. The focus here is Nintendo's Joy-Con 2 setup. Wael. Ahmed.
- The game is planned for release on 25 June 2026.
The Joy-Con 2 feature was also shown during Nintendo's recent broadcast. With mouse-controlled targeting, players will be able to move into a more pointer-like aiming style, which Nintendo presents as a more natural way to line up shots and guide the ship. It gives this Switch 2 release more than one personality: part throwback, part new hardware showcase.

For Z-retro, this is a sensible mix of nostalgia and convenience. The Nintendo 64 controller option respects the feel many players remember, while Joy-Con 2 mouse targeting gives curious pilots another way to fly without replacing the classic approach.
