Nintendo gave Star Fox fans a sudden jolt with a surprise Nintendo Direct, announced only minutes before it went live. The presentation revealed the long-awaited next step for the series: a new game simply called Star Fox.

Rather than a fully new adventure, this release is a remake of Star Fox 64, the Nintendo 64 classic that helped define the series for many players. It is planned for Switch 2 and is currently dated for June 25, 2026.

The footage shown in the Direct points to stages that stay very close to the original game. The layout and flow appear familiar, but the visual treatment is far more modern, giving the old space battles a much cleaner and flashier look.

The Star Fox crew has also been redesigned. That change is likely to get fans talking, especially because the characters are so tied to the memory of the N64 era. Even so, the new look still seems aware of the series' puppet-style roots.

Z-retro's view: this looks like a careful return to a well-loved Nintendo classic. Keeping the Star Fox 64 shape while updating the presentation may please longtime fans, though the new character designs will probably be the part people watch most closely.
