Two Classics, One Tiny Screen

Homebrew coder Richter Wilker has given two very different games a Game Boy Color makeover. Animal Crossing and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night have both been rebuilt as smaller demakes, keeping the spirit of the originals while working inside a much tighter retro frame.

The Animal Crossing project is called Animal Forest GB Folk. It includes a friendly village setup, time-based events, festivals, and mini-games that echo the wider series. Players can also gather fruit, dig for treasure, and fish, so the slower daily rhythm still comes through clearly.

The Castlevania demake is also known as Gospel of Belmont. It retells parts of Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, reshaping them around the limits of Nintendo's color handheld. Its castle keeps a persistent layout, but rooms can change shape as you move back and forth, making each run less predictable.

For Z-retro, these projects are a neat reminder of why demakes can be more than novelty. They do not replace the original games, but they show how familiar ideas can feel fresh when filtered through older hardware rules and a bit of careful homebrew craft.
