A PS1 Name Comes Back

Sunsoft is bringing Hard Edge back in a very different form. The 1998 PlayStation action-adventure, also known as T.R.A.G.: Tactical Rescue Assault Group - Mission of Mercy, is being revived as a tactical card battler called Hard Edge - War Zone.

This new game is not a straight remake. It takes place six months before the story of the original Hard Edge, giving the old PS1 cult favorite a fresh setup while staying tied to its world.

Cards Meet Cover Fire

Sunsoft describes Hard Edge - War Zone as a mix of shootout tension and card-game strategy. Battles move forward in turns, but there is an important twist: teammates act at the same time.

That means timing matters as much as choosing the right card. A squad can pin enemies down with heavy fire, or one player can draw attention while the others move in from the side. The idea is simple, but very tactical: victory comes from the team acting together.

Decks Change During Battle

Deck building is also a central part of the game. Before a match begins, players create a deck that fits both the chosen character and their own preferred style of play.

The deck is not locked in place once the action starts. As characters gain levels during a match, players can add fresh cards or improve cards they already have. Sunsoft is putting weight on both planning ahead and reacting well when the fight changes.

The first Hard Edge was a single-player action-adventure. Players could freely switch between four characters, with each one bringing different abilities to the mission. Its look was very much of its PS1 moment, pairing pre-rendered backgrounds with 3D character models.

For retro fans, that makes Hard Edge - War Zone an unusual return: not a museum-piece reissue, and not a simple modern polish pass, but a new tactical take on a late-'90s PlayStation name.
