A Big Date For Dragon Quest Fans
Dragon Quest fans have a fresh date to circle on the calendar. A 40th anniversary livestream for the long-running RPG series is planned for 27 May, and naturally, many players are hoping this is where Square Enix finally says more about Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.
The spark came from a YouTube video that has since been delisted. In it, series creator Yuji Horii said a livestream would take place on 27 May, and that there should be an announcement connected to the next game. He also noted that the broadcast would include other items beyond that next title, giving the event a wider anniversary feel rather than one single reveal.
There is some history behind the excitement. Dragon Quest had a similar showcase for its 35th anniversary in 2021, and that event brought several announcements, including Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest Treasures. With that in mind, fans are not being wild for expecting the 40th anniversary stream to carry real news.
Horii did not directly name Dragon Quest 12 in the delisted video, so that part still needs a careful question mark beside it. Even so, his mention of the next game is hard to ignore. Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age first arrived on PS4 in Japan back in 2017, then launched worldwide in 2018. The Definitive Edition followed in 2020, but a true numbered sequel has now been waiting in the wings for nearly a decade.

Since Dragon Quest 11, Square Enix has kept the series visible around the world through re-releases and remasters, with Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined arriving earlier this year. From Z-retro’s view, the timing feels sensible for a proper sequel update, but the best approach is to enjoy the anniversary moment first and wait for Square Enix to make the details official.
