A Familiar Atari Name Returns
Atari has kept its old name active in a thoughtful way, bringing back games and releasing new hardware with help from partners such as Retro Games Ltd and My Arcade.
Now another classic label is back in view. A fresh trademark application has been filed for the Atari 800XL, and the filing connects the name with “home video game machines.”
Why The 800XL Matters
The original 800XL arrived in 1983 as part of Atari’s 8-bit home computer family. It followed the 400, 800, and 1200XL, with those machines sharing the same core internal technology.

For many retro fans, the 800XL sits in that sweet spot between computer history and living-room nostalgia. It was not just a games machine, but part of the wider home computer wave of the early 1980s.
A Pop Culture Footnote
Atari also gave the system some memorable promotion. Laurence Tureaud, better known as Mr. T, helped advertise the computer in Australia, while Alan Alda served as the spokesperson in North America.
That mix of 8-bit hardware and celebrity marketing gives the 800XL a very specific retro charm, which may explain why a new filing around the name has caught attention.

The trademark listing has appeared on Justia and was also circulated through Bluesky, but the filing alone does not confirm a product, a release date, or the exact shape any possible hardware might take.
Z-retro’s view: this is a small but interesting signal. Until Atari says more, it is best treated as a promising clue rather than a confirmed comeback.
