Why Rebirth Stayed Focused
Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi has shared why Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth did not receive a story DLC expansion, even though the first remake entry did get extra content. The short version: the idea was on the table, but the team chose not to move ahead with it.
In an interview with ntower, Hamaguchi said the developers seriously looked at making story DLC for Rebirth until just before the project entered its official planning stage. That means it was not dismissed early or treated as a side thought. It was a real option for the team.
The concern was timing and impact. Rebirth is the middle chapter in a three-part remake project, so extra story material could have affected work on the third game. For a series with this much history behind it, that kind of caution makes sense. One added chapter can ripple through the whole structure.
Hamaguchi has not closed the door on DLC after the third and final installment, though. The next game still has no confirmed title in this material, despite fake leaks using the name Final Fantasy 7 Return. For now, Rebirth stands as a complete second act, while any future DLC remains only a possibility.
