Pokemon X and Y were a major shift for the series. Moving from Nintendo DS to Nintendo 3DS meant Pokemon stepped into full 3D for the first time, replacing 2D sprites with 3D models across the adventure.

That change was not only about looks. Earlier battle-focused spin-offs had already shown Pokemon in 3D, but X and Y made that style part of the main role-playing series, and that approach has stayed in place ever since.

The sixth generation also brought in ideas that kept influencing later games. The Kalos region gained a stronger sense of place through its 3D world, helping players feel more connected to its lore and making exploration feel more immediate.

Mega Evolution Changed Battles

One of the biggest additions was Mega Evolution. If a Pokemon held the right Mega Stone, it could change form during battle and receive stronger stats, giving Trainers a valuable edge. The idea ended up shaping later special transformation systems and was recently used again as a core mechanic in Pokemon Legends Z-A.

A More Connected Pokemon World

X and Y were also the most connected games in the series at the time. Wonder Trade let players send away a captured Pokemon and receive a random one from another player, adding a simple but memorable online surprise to everyday play.

Another shared feature offered limited-time effects between players, including bonuses such as faster egg hatching and extra experience gains. These points came from battles and staying connected, and seeing someone nearby use them meant you could benefit too.

Outside of battles, X and Y gave players more room to express themselves. For the first time in a main Pokemon game, Trainers could change parts of their look, including shoes, hats, and backpacks, with Kalos shops offering different outfit styles. The games also introduced the Fairy type, which Game Freak said was needed to help balance Dragon-type Pokemon, while also giving Eevee a new evolution in Sylveon.
