Mega Man Xtreme may sit in a smaller corner of the blue bomber timeline, but it still has a place in many early 2000s handheld memories. Now that pocket-sized Mega Man X spin-off has been given a new fan-made refresh on PC.
The new project is called Mega Man DXtreme. It sets out to rework the original Game Boy Color adventure with a fresh version of the story, cleaner-feeling controls, a wider screen view, adjusted weapons, and redesigned boss encounters.
A Game Boy Color Throwback
Capcom released Mega Man Xtreme for the Game Boy Color in 2000. Rather than being a mainline Mega Man X entry, it was a side story built around a cyberspace setup, using ideas and material connected to earlier games including Mega Man X and Mega Man X2.

At the time, reviews seemed to land mostly in the middle-to-positive range. IGN was one of the warmer voices, giving it an 8 and calling it a strong pick for dedicated fans, while still pointing out that the game had notable balance problems.
What The Revamp Changes
Mega Man DXtreme aims to smooth out some of that old handheld roughness without losing the retro shape of the project. Along with the new story approach and better controls, the team highlights the wider display, reworked boss patterns, revised weapons, and other changes meant to make the adventure feel less cramped today.
The fangame was built in Construct 2, Scirra Ltd's HTML5-based 2D game engine. According to the developers, it came together over five months with a 12-person team that included level designers, musicians, and playtesters, led by director Tomycase.

Mega Man DXtreme is available now as a free download on itch.io. It has already received a 1.1 update, which was released to address bugs found by the first wave of players.
For anyone hoping this might lead straight into a remake of Mega Man Xtreme 2 from 2001, the answer is much quieter. Tomycase has said there are currently no plans to continue past the first game.
