THQ Nordic has responded to questions around the new current-gen upgrade for Darksiders Warmastered Edition, but it has not given a detailed reason for the price split between PlayStation and Xbox. The upgrade is now available, and the difference is easy to spot: PS4 owners are asked to pay $10, while Xbox One owners can move to the Xbox Series X|S version at no extra cost.
The update was noted on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 12:30pm, after the publisher addressed reports about the uneven upgrade paths. For players who already own the PS4 version, the PlayStation 5 upgrade costs 9.99€ / 9.99$. Players who own the Xbox One version receive the Xbox Series X|S upgrade free of charge.
That has made the PS5 release feel a little unusual. Darksiders Warmastered Edition is already a remaster of a PS3-era game, originally brought forward for PS4. This new version adds another layer of polish for current hardware rather than presenting itself as a brand-new game.
The PS5 version includes native 4K rendering, a Photo Mode, and support for PlayStation 5 DualSense controller features. Those additions may be welcome for fans who enjoy revisiting older action games with a sharper look and a few modern touches, but the paid upgrade means existing PS4 owners have to decide whether those features are worth another small purchase.

The pricing may explain why the situation looks different across platforms, though this has not been confirmed as the official reason. The PS4 version is staying on sale for 19.99€ / 19.99$, while the PS5 version launches at 29.99€ / 29.99$. If the PS4 version stayed cheaper and also included a free PS5 upgrade, new buyers could simply buy the older version and receive the newer one for less.
Under that setup, a new PlayStation customer who wants the PS5 edition pays 29.99€ / 29.99$ either way: either by buying the PS5 release directly, or by buying the PS4 version and then paying the 9.99€ / 9.99$ upgrade fee. Current PS4 owners, however, are the ones who feel the extra charge most clearly, because they already paid for the game before this new version arrived.
On Xbox, the upgrade path is simpler for existing owners. If someone already has the Xbox One version of Darksiders Warmastered Edition, the Xbox Series X|S version is free. That contrast is the heart of the discussion, especially because the game and its current-gen improvements are otherwise being presented together across both console families.
For Z-retro, this is one of those small pricing stories that still matters because old games often live long second lives on new machines. The PS5 upgrade has useful extras, and the pricing logic may make sense for new buyers, but players who already own the game are fair to weigh the charge carefully before jumping back in.
