A Dreamcast Online Favorite Lights Up Again
Bomberman Online has found its way back onto the internet, giving Dreamcast fans another revived online game to enjoy. The 2001 release was built around the kind of fast, messy fun that made Bomberman so easy to love, with support for up to eight players online.
When the Dreamcast faded out in the early 2000s, online play went with it. That was a real loss for a console that had made internet features part of its identity. Over the last few years, though, the community has been steadily bringing pieces of that old network life back, one game at a time.
This return is credited to modder Flyinghead and a newcomer to the scene named Farkus. The project had been around for years: Shuouma had already managed to get Bomberman Online working as far as the lobby, but the final missing parts remained out of reach for a while.
Now those pieces have been put together, and Bomberman Online can be played over the internet again. It is a neat win for Dreamcast preservation, especially because the game was released only in North America and its original servers were switched off in 2003. More than two decades later, the little white console still has a spark in it.
